Wildcats stumble through season

Emotions ran high as the Wildcats took on the Spartans on September 18. The game started promising as the Wildcats took the first quarter with a 7-0 lead. However, as time dragged on, so did the heels of the defense. The Spartans were able to score 15points, the most important of which was scored within the last minute of the game. Similar was last Friday's game against Fond du Lac when the Wildcats drop another disappointing loss, bringing their record to 2-3 in the conference.

"Numerous things went wrong," said head coach Ken Levine. "There were a few mixed up plays on the offensive end and on the defense; we weren't positioned right."

If one thing was gained from these games, it was the perspective of what they need to do in order to beat them next time.

"One thing brought to my awareness from the North/West game," said Levine, "was the lack of attention to the defensive assignments and the lack of intensity."

These downfalls may be due to the lack of experience from players who moved up from junior varsity.

"The caliber of play is more intense and the games are much longer," said junior Connor Schroeder. "You have to be better conditioned and there is much more competition."

The competition seems to have had its effects on the one barrier to the opponent's end zone, the defense.

"We are struggling on the defensive end," said Schroeder. "We've let up some big running plays that have hurt us."

Despite a few errors, there are aspects of the game that are working well for the Wildcats.

"Our greatest strength is our passing offense," said Luepke. "We have a lot of athletes who can catch the ball. Our receivers are all day."

As the Wildcats take on Appleton East tonight at 7 PM, the guys are looking to flip their three-game losing streak around. They can only afford one more loss if they want to qualify for postseason play.

"Our goal is to always win the next game," Levine said, "but our major goal would be to make it to the playoffs."
