Golfers prepare for regionals

The girls' varsity golf team is far under par when it comes to conference success this season. The girls head into postseason tournaments with a record of 8-1, losing the first meet to Neenah by five points.

"Our meet against Neenah was close and I though we played well," said head coach Nicole Peterson. "They played one of their best rounds against us, but I think we have as good of a chance as anybody else and I would never say they are unbeatable."

According to Peterson, the team has a lot of depth compared to past years and with only five varsity spots, the competition was nail-biting.

"We had about eight girls vying for five varsity spots," she said. "That fifth spot was a lot more competitive this year and they were all qualified to play there. It really came down to qualifying rounds."

With so many qualified varsity competitors, it is no surprise that the team teed their way to success this year.

"We won the Green Bay East Invite and we took fourth at the Sheboygan and Fond du Lac Invites," said Peterson "We have never really placed that high, so that was cool."

Individually, at least one golfer from West medaled in every meet. Senior Morgan Zuleger has medaled in eight of the nine conference meets and junior Gabbie Machado has medaled in one. Zuleger and senior Natalie Sweeney medaled in the Sheboygan Invite. At the conference tournament on Thursday September 24, Zuleger led the team with a low of 76.

"A lot of people can get off the tee and hit it decent," said Peterson, "but it's that short game that's just within 50 to 100 yards that Morgan has just significantly improved on. She is even better than she was before."

The Wildcats finished fourth at the tournament and are hosting the regional tournament this Wednesday.

"We should be able to win the regional if we just play to our game," said Peterson. "I don't want to say it's a done deal. Even if we were best in the state, it's never a done deal."
