Policy pushes for higher expectations

Although rules and regulations are often created to discipline the disorderly, West's administration and student government is taking a new approach through the "Student in Good Standing Policy." The policy mandates that all fines be paid and students' grades be sufficient to participate in certain activities.

"It's a positive addition to the curriculum because the administration is acknowledging students that care," senior Kylie O'Keefe said.

Many agree the policy will be effective on reinforcing the importance of a hard earned grade.

"A student's GPA is not attached to all things. That may be one thing we're willing to do in the future," Dean of Students Matt Zimmerman stated.

While this new idea is not fully evolved, the addition would be to link a student's GPA to dances and sporting events. Zimmerman explained the possibility of only students passing all classes to participate in extra curriculars.

"[Extra curriculars] are earned privileges, not just rights," he said.

The principle of this new policy is to reward those who achieve high academic undertakings, while sparking the improvement of other students.

"School is for academics first; we care about academics, Zimmerman said.
