State law buckles down to promote safety

Safety concerns motivated law makers to change seatbelt codes as of June 30.

"It will cost society less with the law in place, by decreasing injuries and fatalities," Police School Liaison Officer Dave Johnson said.

Although the fine of not "clicking it" only takes ten dollars out of one's pocket, the consequences are much more lethal when accidents occur. Statistics prove that 63% of fatalities could have been prevented if the passengers were buckled up.

"It sets a good example for younger kids as well," Johnson said.

Providing the tools for adolescents to begin safe habits now is designed to begin the solution for future teenage drivers. However, current teenage drivers have varying points of views relating to the law.

"[Students will wear their seatbelts] if they get ticketed, but probably not until then," junior Laura Thiel said.

Although many doubt whether the law will be enforced, some don't need the reinforcement to understand the importance of wearing a seatbelt.

"I always wear my seatbelt. I never ever forget to wear it," junior Austin Leichtnam said.

However, not everyone was brought up under the impression that seatbelt usage was necessary.

"[I wear my seatbelt] only when I am told to by my husband," Oshkosh resident Holly Halwas said.

Halwas finds it a hard choice to give up, regardless that she has been ticketed. Some of the ticketed may feel their punishment was unfair. However, officials find it is an ethical and necessary step.

"The function of the law is to keep citizens safe," Johnson explained.
