Thespians add dramatic influence to Network

Now that West’s resident thespians have completed their run of the spring play, You Can’t Take it With You, they have set out on a brand new endeavor. Sock n’ Buskin members’ call for a community service project has been answered by a local group called Network.

“Network is basically a peer group with a purpose to help kids improve their social skills,” said Speech and Language teacher Sue Wilder, one of the leaders of the group.

The organization meets monthly during the lunch period to do activities that will allow students to have fun while subconsciously learning vital lessons in communication.

“We try to pair West students together and get other clubs involved and we are thankful for the drama clubs interest,” said CDB teacher Amy Locke, another of the group’s leaders.

Brian Phelps, the advisor of Sock n’ Buskin, sees positive benefits for both of the clubs.

“The drama club has a mission statement to get involved in the community and help other students,” he said. “This opportunity to participate in another organization is great.”

By adding drama activities into the mix, Wilder hopes that the club will become more fun for the students who take part in it.

“As the group continues, we hope to add more drama games into the program,” explained Wilder. “These activities will come in contact with real life social interactions. We are very fortunate to have the drama students be so willing to participate.”

With the recent interest from the drama club, Wilder hopes that the Network will be able to grow from this experience.

“Next year we hope to expand the club to incoming freshmen,” said Wilder, “Hopefully more groups will be willing to get involved.”
