Although numbers dwindled at the end of the season, the forensics members managed to prove themselves a strong force in the world of competitive speaking, sending participants to two different state competitions.
“At the WHSFA State, which is an individual competition, we had 11 entries, and everyone that went received a gold or silver,” explained second-year forensics coach Theresa Berger. “We had a very small team representing West. Fortunately, we had two members place: Rebecca Liu, a strong freshman performer, in four-minute speaking; and Mary Coan, a sophomore, in radio speaking.”
Berger believes that the work ethic and diligence of returning sophomores had a significant impact on the team’s success this year.
“Last year’s freshmen came back this year stronger and more confident, and became the powerhouses of the team,” she said. “Once they had that year of experience under their belts, they were really ready for this year.”
Though this year was successful, Berger hopes to make a few changes to the team next season.
“Next year, I’d really like to focus more on team-building,” she explained. “Also, I’d like to standardize attendance so that we can really become a force in competition again.”
